Drowning in file data?
Assessment, Migration and Management for Unstructured Data

The Challenge

For many companies, data growth means buying new storage while continuing to maintain legacy storage. Approached this way, the cost of data growth is quickly compounded:

  • New storage – from acquisition to implementation to management – is expensive
  • Old, underutilized devices consume power, cooling, and management resources
  • Data migration projects inevitably run over time and over budget
  • Users are disrupted every time their files are moved: their shortcuts and embedded links are broken
  • Administrators are largely unaware of the value of the data they manage, so costly backup, security, and retention policies must be applied across all files
  • Shares are stored in distributed network locations, forcing users to endlessly browse for the files they need

The AutoVirt Approach

AutoVirt software helps move file data with minimal disruption to end users. AutoVirt provides policies for assessing and moving data, and a global namespace to keep files consistently accessible.

  • Minimize new storage expenditures by improving storage utilization
  • Reduce daily management costs by decreasing file system complexity
  • Seamlessly add new storage – and quickly retire costly old devices

When to use AutoVirt

  • To assess your file storage
  • To migrate data without disrupting end user access
  • To reorganize your file system architecture
  • To create and implement a tiering or archiving strategy
  • To replace StorageX/VFM®
  • As a powerful alternative to Microsoft DFS™

How it Works

AutoVirt virtualizes access to your NAS devices and Windows file servers by building a global namespace: a
service in your network that receives client requests for files, and returns the appropriate storage location.

The AutoVirt global namespace allows your clients to use their shortcuts and embedded links, even after you’ve moved the files they reference.

The AutoVirt global namespace is integrated with policies that automate movement. When you move data using an AutoVirt policy, the namespace is updated accordingly.

AutoVirt’s namespace technology also allows you to create logical views of shares – regardless of their physical location in the network – and provide these views for your users to browse. You can use this functionality to organize user data without changing the underlying storage.

Three Product Editions: Assess, Migrate and Manage

AutoAssess provides the information you need to create a tiering strategy or plan a migration or consolidation. AutoAssess rapidly scans the file system to provide metrics on file ownership, type, last modified date, age, and created date; it also reports on access and ACL errors that will cause delays during data migration. These scans of file metadata are non-intrusive and do not affect network performance.

AutoMigrate automates the data migration process, from the initial pre-migration copy to the final migration and cutover. End users are automatically redirected to their data (via the global namespace) as it is migrated. Following an AutoVirt migration, all pre-migration shortcuts and embedded links continue to work as before, eliminating the need to reconfigure clients following migration. AutoMigrate can be used for file server or NAS swap-outs, for consolidations, or to split up large file systems. Scheduling, throttling, threading, and error handling are manageable in the AutoVirt UI.

AutoManage enables ongoing data management and improved end user access. AutoManage includes assessment and migration functionality, folder-level tiering, and availability (mirroring and distribution with failover). The AutoVirt global namespace provides all client referrals, allowing administrators to efficiently restructure their file system.
